Our Home: Our Bedroom

Another day, another photo tour of our home! I think this is normal, but it took us a while to really muster the energy to finish putting our bedroom together. It’s probably the least seen part of the home, which means there’s a real lack of motivation to make it shine and represent who we are (we’re the only ones in there, after all). But consider this your friendly push to just DO IT. Invest in your bedroom, put in the effort. As soon as we did, it was as if a flip was switched. Another room (that we’d been living in for almost three years) that felt like HOME. I don’t think I even realized that it didn’t, until it did! I also didn’t realize how I subconsciously avoided this room before we really made it a space that we loved. This whole design served as a little experiment, putting the claims I make (that well-designed spaces make us well-rested, more creative, and more hospitable) to the test…with positive results I might add.

First things first: we had to get rid of (yet another) popcorn ceiling. We also removed all trim and crown moulding (anyone else pretty much over crown moulding? It felt like the height of luxury 10 or so years ago, but now feels so dated to me).

There was also the matter of removing that faux fireplace. You actually couldn’t even call it that – it was more like a random floating mantle.

Isn’t it insane what paint can do?? Removing the carpet was also a game-changing move, as it made the room feel so less dingy.

Y’all have heard me gush about our bedding before, but seriously – it’s the best. I’m a “hot sleeper”, and I can always find the elusive “cold spot” with these sheets (which are also the softest things I’ve ever touched).

The light our room gets makes me so happy. It faces north, so the light is never blinding or overpowering. We also have access to our back patio from our bedroom, and while I imagined we’d use this to sneak out early in the morning or late at night for romantic patio chats, the main benefit is I can bring in muddy little boys and usher them into the shower before they make tracks all over the rest of the house.

I love a creeping gallery wall; one that doesn’t just have a basic rectangular shape, but rather wraps around furniture (like this), or around corners (like in our office).

We purchased our chest of drawers during our first year of marriage. It was a splurge for us and really well-made, but not necessarily something I would pick out today. It originally had oil-rubbed bronze hardware, but switching those out with these brass ones really updated the piece.

This is the first time I’ve stored our books in our bedroom. I wasn’t sure I’d like it at first, but it turns out I LOVE it. An unexpected and unintended consequence is that I find myself reaching for books that I’ve owned for years and never read, or re-reading favorites.
