The Weekend Haps – August 1

Lifestyle

Do not EVEN ask me how it’s August 1 right now. It makes no sense, and both thrills and terrifies me (hooray for school! wait – is school even happening?!). I know y’all feel me. Moving on.

In case you missed it…

I gave you guys a tour of our bedroom on Monday. Before and afters, details, sources – click here for it all!

Now for the haps…

  • My body has felt STRESSED lately. Not necessarily my mind, but my body. This is often a sign of a magnesium deficiency, so I’m back to taking this supplement every day and already I’m feeling better (necessary disclaimer that I’m not a/your doctor).

  • If you like the no-makeup-makeup look, then you need this product. It’s my favorite way to get a clean + glowy look (also hi it’s on sale this weekend!).

  • There are a couple of GREAT design books coming out later this year, but you can pre-order them now. This one from Studio McGee has a sweet storyline to it, and this one is from Amber Lewis (one of the very best out there and a constant source of design inspiration for me).

  • I’ve been wearing these overalls non-stop since they were delivered last week. Playing with kids, dressed up a touch for running to lunch, or even as a swimsuit cover up – I like my clothes to be as versatile as possible. They’re already on sale, and there’s an extra 30% off with code WHATADEAL.

  • So many people have recommended the book White Fragility recently. I read it, found it thought-provoking, and have (rather flippantly, if I’m honest) recommended it to others since. BUT, this article from The Atlantic was extremely eye-opening to me. I knew there was something unsettling about the book, but couldn’t quite put my finger on it (which should have given me more pause); but McWhorter really hones in on the major issues with it. Since it’s so popular now (basically regarded as required reading, don’t you feel?) I just wanted to share this context and criticism.

Personally this week, I’ve been feeling challenged to think more critically – about everything, really, but the social and political issues we’re wading through right now as a nation. I’ve noticed I’ve been doing a lot of assuming: assuming someone simply knows what I “really” mean; assuming someone has fact-checked a story before sending it to me; assuming I understand topics that need more research (on my end). I’ve just been moving really fast, and it’s not how I want to roll. I share that with you only in hopes that it encourages you to do the same, if need be. Let’s think more critically, share a little more slowly, have higher standards all around. Only good will come of that.

xo,

sarah

We all need more of this kind of humility as we confront injustice and navigate the way forward. Thanks for modeling this well, Sarah, and for taking the time to write this. Great post!
